As Rene and I watch The Passion of the Christ tonight, I can’t help but sob away. My heart aches seeing the suffering Jesus endured to save us all from our sins. The pain he suffered was more than any man should have ever suffered.
I began to think how when we suffer just a little, we are often so quick to give up. We quickly give up on our failing relationships, our careers, when life just doesn’t go as we expect, or we don’t get what we expect when we expect it. And we give up on God.
Yet Jesus, in all His suffering, never once gave up on us. Even as he was nailed to the cross He asked that God forgive them. Time and time again, God forgave the Israelites despite the many times they disobeyed and broke His laws. Disappointment after disappointment, God forgave them. Just as He continues to forgive us.
My son Matt posted earlier today on Facebook saying, “I’m not perfect. I make mistakes like everybody else. But we can’t go down the same path and expect different results. It’s time for a change.” He is right. We all make mistakes and not one of us is perfect. But what we have been given from Christ, is the opportunity to change through His forgiveness. To correct our errors. To be works in progress always striving to be better in our obedience to God. Like Matt says, “It’s time for a change.”
Let us be encouraged to take that next step to change that which we have allowed to hinder our growth with Christ. Let us not seek perfection, but seek Christ in all His perfection. Let us be forgiving of one another just as Christ, with all His love and mercy, forgave us from our sins. It Is Finished! It is time for a change.
