What You Say Matters

“Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24

What you say to yourself has the power to transform how you see yourself. I’ve come to the realization that every word I speak over myself matters. I can choose to speak life over myself or literally speak words that slowly kill the essence of who God created me to be.

Just recently I was torn emotionally. My spirit broken over painful words spoken to me. What someone had said to me had pierced my soul like an arrow shot straight through it. I was devastated. And for days played that conversation over and over in my head. I began to feel the sting of hurt and disappointment.

I started to feel doubt creeping in so cleverly. Isn’t it just like the enemy to take our moments of weakness and use this time to start toying with our mind. I caught myself saying, “Maybe I’m just not cut out for this.” You see, in all my hurt, I found myself speaking all that disappointment over myself. I was down talking the calling on my life.

Isn’t it like us to do this. We feel hurt or pain, disappointment and discouragement because something didn’t go as planned. Or maybe we look in the mirror and don’t see that size 6 staring back at us. Or maybe we allow the sting of rejection to camp out in our spirit. Just sitting there telling us over and over how we just aren’t good enough, or aren’t qualified enough.

I caught what I had said. Rene was quick to put me in check and remind me of who God said I was. My husband spoke life back into my spirit. And that was exactly what I needed to do. Speak life over myself. Look at myself in the mirror and remind myself that I am more than enough. I am chosen to lead and encourage. I am worthy of all God has called me to be. And so much more.

We must remind ourselves that what we say to ourselves has the power to transform how we see ourselves. Proverbs 10:11 says, “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life.” If we speak negative over ourselves then we will only see the negative in us. We will be judgmental and critical of every aspect of our being. We drain the life out of us.

Let me just say something. Jesus don’t like ugly! I said it. And I said it to myself!!!

Jesus wants us speaking lovingly to ourselves. Declaring who God says we are. Loving who we are and where we are in life. Even if life’s circumstances aren’t so favorable. It’s ok. Even when others aren’t on board with where you are going, that’s ok. You my dear are beautiful, worthy, qualified and more than enough.

Don’t accept rejection as the final destination. Look at rejection as a redirection to where God is leading you to. Look at other’s perception of who they see you as, as simply their opinion but never a fact.

Pray this with me.

“Father, set a guard over my mouth. That when I speak to myself, over myself and to others, the words I use are filled with love, adoration and grace. Help me to be mindful of the words I choose today and every day to follow. In Jesus Name…Amen”

XOXO…Ileen
